Renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha, fondly known as the Bihar Kokila, was cremated with state honours on Thursday, November 7, at Gulabi Ghat in Patna. Sinha died on Tuesday night, November 5, at the age of 72 at AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi, following an extended illness. Her son, Anshuman, performed the final rites.
The late singer’s body was brought to her Rajendra Nagar residence in Patna on Wednesday morning, where family, friends, and admirers gathered to pay their last respects.
Known for her soulful renditions of traditional Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Magahi songs, Sharda Sinha held a special place in the hearts of millions. The singer had been fighting multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018.
Among her most popular songs are Kelwa Ke Paat Par Ugalan Suraj Mal Jhake Jhuke, Hey Chhathi Maiya, Ho Dinanath, Bahangi Lachakat Jaaye, Roje Roje Ugelaa, Suna Chhathi Maai, Jode Jode Supawa, and Patna Ke Ghat Par. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2018.
In a fitting tribute to her legacy, the state accorded her full honours, recognising her contribution to Bihar’s rich cultural heritage.
